Long Beach, Southern California’s Urban Waterfront Playground, is just 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles, located along more than 11 miles of sandy beachfront, inland waterways and bays. One of the West Coast’s largest cities with a downtown waterfront, Long Beach combines the sophistication and style of a big urban city with the relaxed atmosphere of a beach resort.
Timetable:
Formula E is the world’s first fully-electric motorsport with 10 teams and 20 drivers racing on street circuits constructed in some of the most famous cities on the globe.
The Long Beach ePrix will take place on April 4, 2015 with practice, qualifying and the race all taking place over the course of the day to minimise the disruption to the host city.
Circuit Guide:
The Long Beach Formula E race, or ePrix, takes place on April 4 2015 and forms the sixth of nine races for the inaugural season. The track uses a modified configuration of the iconic Long Beach street circuit in South California, which is the longest running in the US, beginning in 1975 and hosting Formula One from 1976 to 1983 before staging annual CART, Champ Car and IndyCar races. At 2.1km and featuring seven turns, the Formula E cars will use the same iconic start/finish line adjacent to the Marina before heading off in a clockwise direction past the Rainbow Lagoon. They will then turn right onto South Pine Avenue before re-joining with the more familiar track configuration. The cars will then pass around the grounds of the Convention Centre before a final right-hand hairpin brings them back across the start/finish line to complete the lap.
Driver’s guide:
Gil de Ferran, Formula E Driver Ambassador:
Long Beach is an iconic track. It is the most famous street circuit in North America and is a little bit of a tradition in American motorsport. It says a lot for Formula E that it is racing at such a venue. The track layout Formula E will use is more similar to the old layout than the current IndyCar version. It’s obviously a little bit shorter, but the southern end of the track is the same as it’s always been and it’s a very interesting part of the circuit with the famous hairpin leading into the straight. There’s a lot of time to be gained or lost at that end of the track – and I speak from personal experience!
“Also the two right handers at the north end of the track, especially the one at the end of the straight (turn 5), will provide great passing opportunities. The whole layout looks very ‘racy’. With the exception of one corner in the southern end, Long Beach is super wide, which is why traditionally you have such good racing there, because people can get side-by-side.
“It’s going to be interesting to see from a strategic perspective where the drivers are going to make the use of the boost to overtake each other. If you make it on one straight you can be attacked back on the next straight, so that’s going to be fascinating.
